The Vortex Visitor Center
The project was recognized as a “living educational model” — one that meaningfully engaged the community and delivered lasting value through thoughtful design and content strategy.
Project Overview
Gippsland Water set out to create a space that could educate, inspire, and engage the public on the importance of sustainable water practices. The result was The Vortex Visitor Center, an award-winning environmental education hub located in Gippsland, Australia.
Challenge
The goal wasn’t just to build a sustainable facility — it was to deliver an immersive experience that would drive real behavior change across all age groups. The center needed to speak to primary students and university learners alike, all while providing a hands-on understanding of water management and environmental responsibility.
SOLUTION
The Vortex was designed as a dual-purpose achievement: a cutting-edge green building paired with a rich, multi-level educational experience. Every aspect of the visitor journey was intentionally crafted to balance architectural sustainability (“the outer”) with impactful environmental storytelling (“the inner”).
From interactive exhibits to curriculum-aligned programming, the experience addressed a wide range of educational needs. Community consultation and strategic planning ensured that local audiences felt connected and invested in the content — turning passive visitors into active stewards of the environment.
OUTCOME
Upon opening, The Vortex received the Banksia Origin Gold Medal, with judges praising its blend of architectural innovation and educational excellence. The project was recognized as a “living educational model” — one that meaningfully engaged the community and delivered lasting value through thoughtful design and content strategy.
For Gippsland Water, The Vortex became more than a visitor center — it became a catalyst for awareness, action, and change.
